How to apply on company career pages

A good direct application starts before you click apply. Read the job description fully, visit the company website, and decide whether the role genuinely fits your level, location preference, and skills. This prevents wasted applications and helps you tailor your materials. When you know why you are applying, your answers become sharper.

Keep a base resume, a role-specific resume version, and a simple document of reusable answers ready. Many portals ask for short questions such as why you want this role, notice period, expected salary, or preferred location. Preparing thoughtful but concise responses saves time and improves consistency.

Large employers may hire for several very different functions at the same time. The same company might be looking for a support associate, a frontend developer, and a data analyst. If you use one generic resume for all of them, you dilute your fit. Focus your summary, key skills, and top projects on the specific role in front of you.

This does not mean rewriting every line from scratch. Often, adjusting the project order, keywords, and top bullets is enough. The point is to help the recruiter see relevance quickly. Company portals can feel impersonal, so your resume has to do more work on its own.

Application portals often create friction through small details: required fields, duplicate uploads, dropdown mismatches, and profile forms that overwrite older information. Candidates lose credibility when dates do not match the resume or when key fields are left half-finished. Slow, careful form-filling matters more than people think.

After submitting, confirm that the uploaded resume is the correct version and that the final summary looks sensible. Some systems strip formatting or parse fields poorly. A one-minute review at the end can prevent a surprisingly common mistake: applying to a strong role with the wrong attachment.

Direct applications only become useful when you can track them. Record the company, role, portal link, date applied, and any assessment email that follows. Without tracking, candidates either apply repeatedly to the same role or forget to follow up when a recruiter actually replies. A simple tracker creates stability in a process that otherwise feels chaotic.

Following up is reasonable when done politely and with timing. If you have a recruiter contact or a clear hiring email, a short message after a week or two can be appropriate, especially if the role is still active. The goal is to express interest, not demand a decision.
